Mrs Phillips, who works as a tutor at the University of Wollongong’s Shoalhaven campus, will take on incumbent Ann Sudmalis (Liberal) for the title of Member for Gilmore.
“I’m just looking forward to being out in our community talking with voters, one conversation at a time. As many conversations as it takes, I’ll be there,” she said.
Mrs Phillips contested the seat of South Coast at the March state election, securing a 10.5 per cent swing to Labor after preferences.
As part of the proposed federal boundary redistribution, the Gilmore electorate stretches from Kiama to Tuross Head. Last month, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull indicated the election would be held in “September-October” 2016.
