Wollongong is lucky enough to have another international act descend upon our region, with the greatest circus on earth - Cirque du Soleil.
It’s believed ticket sales in the region for their latest offering Quidam have been slow, possibly due to being smack bang in the middle of Christmas and New Years.
However, opening night was nearly a full house with a flurry of families.
Unlike other Cirque productions that have graced our shores, Quidam is quite a dark story and may not be suitable for children prone to bad dreams or those who scare easily.
However it’s a magnificent show, that through it’s dark undertones, it’s 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and lively characters create an amazing experience.
It tells the story of young girl Zoe who dreams up a fantastical world to escape the everyday boredom of her life.
Some mums and dads in the audience told the Mercury they thought it was portraying more of a “nightmare” world, but their children still loved it.
“I think my boys were too young to understand so it went over their heads,” said a Shellharbour mother of two.
That was also the sentiment of a father with his young daughter.
At interval he was a little concerned, though by the end of the production his eight-year-old was brimming with excitement at the seemingly magical abilities of these athletes.
If you haven’t experienced a Cirque du Soleil show before and seen for yourself what everyone fusses about, then do it.
Not only will you enjoy a fun afternoon or evening out, you’ll be inspired by the amazing feats of the human body.
It’s good to support major productions when they bring their tour to the Illawarra – it shows we are an appreciative community and it will keep them coming back.
In the past Wollongong has been treated to Lady Gaga, Lenny Kravitz, Cold Chisel and Powderfinger’s final tour.
Our region is certainly spoiled more than many other regions. Already 2016 is looking to be a grand year for entertainment.
The next national company to visit will be the Australian Ballet with a production tailored to suit children from age three.
So if you’re looking for something to razzle, dazzle and amaze you this Christmas break, then run away to the Cirque.
You won’t regret it.
