Champion Fours finalists running hot

BOWLS

Thirroul's Paul Robertson will skip against Oak Flats' Mathew McIntyre in Saturday's final of the Illawarra Zone 16 Champion of Club Champion Fours at Fairy Meadow Bowling Club.

The two clubs were in sizzling form in the preliminary rounds last weekend, especially in their semi-finals.

Robertson with partners Barry Swann, Shane Jones and Liam Dun, playing as his third, beat the Wiseman Park Wollongong City team of Leslie Lewis, Steve Worthington, John Piper and Robbie Warren 24-5 in their semi-final last Sunday.

Not to be outdone on the scale of impressive wins, skip McIntyre and his Oak Flats fours champions Lee Smith, David Smith and Alan McDonald (third) had a 25-8 win over The Orb's Scott Gillies, Andrew Spriggs, Joe Gerards and Craig Griffiths.

The Orb had a bye in round one, then won on forfeit over Jamberoo in round two before beating the Scarborough-Wombarra fours champions to qualify for the semi-finals.

Oak Flats won on forfeit over Albion Park in the first round, then beat hosts Fairy Meadow 20-16 in round two before accounting for the Dapto club champions in round three and The Orb for a spot in the final.

Thirroul had a first-round bye, then beat Kiama 27-19 in round two and edged out Warilla 18-14 in round three, before the big win over Wiseman Park.

The final on Saturday is from 1pm.

The tournament features the club fours champions from Illawarra Zone 16 and is the last major Zone 16 championship event for 2012.
