Police say two people who sparked an air and land search after spotting two girls enter the ocean at Coledale, did the right thing by reporting the incident.
Wollongong police were called to Coledale Beach about 12.10am yesterday after reports two girls were missing.
A witness fishing nearby told officers he saw two girls, aged about 16, enter the water.
‘‘He saw them standing knee deep in the water and when he looked back didn’t see them come out,’’ Wollongong police Acting Inspector Rob Vergano said.
Neither the man nor his fishing companion kept a continuous watch of the girls.
An air and land-based search was conducted with the help of the NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter, however no-one was located.
The search was concluded and police had yesterday not received any missing person reports.
Insp Vergano said the witnesses had done the right thing by contacting emergency services.
He urged anyone with information to contact Wollongong police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
