It took 10 B-Double trucks to transport and will take workers eight days to unpack and set up, but when the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience officially opens next week, it will have been worth the effort.

The free exhibition, which is the size of an Olympic swimming pool, follows a timeline spanning from pre-war Australia to the present day, using a mix of visuals, artefacts, audio and film. Visitors can walk through recreated First World War environments and view more than 200 artefacts normally housed at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
The feedback is that people have been very moved and touched by the experience.
- Brigadier Alison Creagh
Wollongong will be the first community in New South Wales to view the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience when it opens on Monday January 11 at the UOW Sports Hub.
Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience executive director Brigadier Alison Creagh said the event provided visitors with an interactive way to commemorate the First World War and ensuing century of service.
Brigadier Alison Creagh, Executive Director of the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience said visitors to the exhibition had a once in a lifetime opportunity to view an extensive collection of genuine military artefacts including an oar from a boat that was used at Anzac Cove and rare German weaponry.
“From Gallipoli to the Western Front, this is our story as a young nation. The experiences of these Australians and New Zealanders helped define the Australian character and spirit,” Brigadier Creagh said.
Wollongong is the sixth region to host the event which has already had more than 55,000 visitors in Tasmania and country Victoria.
“The feedback is that people have been very moved and touched by the experience. We hope the Wollongong community will take the opportunity to visit and see first-hand the action, and at times, devastation of the First World War.”
The exhibition, which concludes on January 20 also features a community zone for local stories curated by the Wollongong community and will be officially opened by his Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley, Governor of NSW on Monday, January 11.
More than 8000 tickets have already been booked, with tickets still available. Visit www.spiritofanzac.gov.au.
