On Wednesday she will realise that dream after being granted a wildcard entry into the doubles draw of her home Grand Slam alongside partner Belinda Woolcock.
It follows a stellar sophomore season for the University of Athens Georgia on the U.S. college circuit in which she climbed to No.12 in the ITA division one singles rankings.
‘‘It’s an incredible feeling,’’ Perez said.
‘‘You work really hard over the years and growing up as a kid you always have this dream and to actually get there is really fulfilling and I’m just excited to get out there.
‘‘I’ve always gone over to college with the goal of going professional.
‘‘I know that Tennis Australia is always watching my results so I knew if I performed well I’d give myself the chance of being looked at.
‘‘Throughout the year I worked really hard with that in the back of my mind, that it could open up new doors if I did well.”
The 20-year-old’s strong finish to the college season, in which she had four wins against top-25 ranked opponents, means she will maker her first grand slam appearance in good form.
University of Florida alum Woolcock is currently ranked No.3 in the ITA ranking and Perez is confident they can topple fellow Australian wildcards Storm Sanders and Jessica Moore in the opening round.
‘‘I had a really good end to the year in college and I’m really happy with how I’m hitting them,” Perez said.
‘‘Belinda and I trained together here at the National Tennis Academy [in Melbourne] for two years and we’ve played a fair bit together so I know her really well.
‘‘We’ve drawn Storm Sanders and Jessica Moore and we know them really well. They’re a really good pair and they’ll be coming out to get us.
‘‘We’re probably underdogs so we’ve got nothing to lose and we want to make the most of this opportunity.’’
