Australia Day activities in the Kiama municipality began with the traditional community breakfasts, games and speakers at Gerringong, Jamberoo, Kiama Downs and Kiama.
An estimated 350-400 people attended the Jamberoo event, 250 people in Gerringong and approximately 150 people each attended in Kiama and Kiama Downs.
Coronation Park, Kiama, hosted extra activities including live music in the gazebo with Kiama blues/rock band Out of the Blue and Tropical Wax, as well as a free jumping castle and face-painting.
Kiama Mayor Brian Petschler and Australia Day Committee chairman, Kiama councillor Neil Reilly attended the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony in the Joyce Wheatley Community Centre.
Six new citizens from five countries pledged their loyalty to Australia and the community at the ceremony.
Illawarra optometrist and Kiama businesswoman Dr Susan Ang, a child of Cambodian refugees, addressed the crowd at both the citizenship ceremony and Jamberoo event.
Kiama’s internationally recognised stuntman Robbie Maddison addressed the gathering at the Kiama Downs breakfast at Jones Beach.
A planned Twilight Concert in Kiama’s Hindmarsh Park was cancelled due to the forecast of heavy rain.
