After a while the screams would subside, or the police were called, and the occupants would be seen the next day.

But on Monday the domestic violence that had become routine turned fatal.

The body of mother-of-five Sharon Michelutti was found in the bedroom of her home just after midday on Monday.

It is understood her de facto partner, Gavin Debeyer, 50, went to a police station earlier in the day day to report that Ms Michelutti had tried to kill herself.

The situation moved into a murder investigation when police arrived at the pair's single-level home and found Ms Michelutti with stab wounds.

Mr Debeyer, who neighbours said had been in a tumultuous relationship with Ms Michelutti since she was 14 years old, had to be restrained by police on a nearby street corner.

He was later charged with murder.

Emotional scenes erupted on Kentucky Road on Tuesday as one of the couple's children turned up demanding to see his mother.

Ms Michelutti's adult son tried to get under the police tape before he was wrestled to the ground by several police officers.

"I just want to see my mum," he screamed as he sat on the curb in handcuffs.

"Is she still in there? My dad killed her, didn't he?"

A neighbour came over to calm him down and lit him a cigarette.

Detectives leaned down and told the man his mother had died. He was later taken away in an ambulance.

Twenty-four-hours earlier, a sibling was seen running down the street screaming after finding his mother's body.

"Her son ran out on the street and I wondered what was going on," said a resident, who asked not to be named.

"He was running through the street and then his friend came eventually and comforted him."

The resident said the son, who could barely speak, made a gesture with his hand across his throat when asked what was wrong.

Ms Michelutti's family took to social media to express their grief.

"One of the toughest days off [sic] my life," relative Kurt Michelutti wrote on Facebook.

"People just ring ur parents and tell them u love them. I'm ok I'll speak to use later.

"I need my own time."

Neighbour Markita Galea said the couple's daughter and older son were at the scene on Monday and were utterly distraught.

"[The daughter] was with our friend and she was crying and distraught and [the son] was walking up and down and pacing, really anxious and angry," she said.

"You could just tell he was extremely angry and wanted to lose it.

"I just felt very sad because I used to be friends with her [daughter] and that is their mum and I didn't want to think what would happen if it was my mum.
 
"They fought a lot, at least weekly," she said. "My mum would hear them and she was going to call the police last week, then it stopped."

The sounds of fighting were heard echoing out of the couple's home twice last week, another resident said.

The woman, who did not want to be named, described Ms Michelutti as a "shy and timid" woman, who had been subjected to decades of violence.

"I came home yesterday and a guy told me Sharon was killed," she said.

"I was nearly in tears. So I drove around the corner and I just started crying.

"When is this domestic violence going to stop?"

Mr Debeyer did not appear in Burwood Local Court on Tuesday as his case was mentioned and adjourned.
