I would like to voice my opposition to the merger of Shellharbour Council by Wollongong Council.

The State Government says we will be better off - in theory “yes” and in practice “no”.
The new CEO would want near a double increase in salary due to his bigger obligation, so would all the engineers, councillors and mayor.
All existing employees of Shellharbour would receive an increase in salary, up would go our registrations and insurance on motor vehicles because we would then be under metropolitan.
As we would then be getting weekly bin collections this will increase our rates while our representatives on council will be reduced.
Peter Moran is right if our councillors are not looking after us, let's stand some good ones in their place at the next elections.

KEY QUESTIONS ON PARKING
The introduction of “rules” for parking in the car park opposite Nth Wollongong Surf Club should be seen for what it is.
An opportunity for Wollongong City Council to increase their revenue through infringement fines.
For fines to be imposed there must be a regulation and if the regulations are not adhered to, fines may be issued.
So WCC introduces regulations that make no sense (other than for revenue raising) in an area that is functioning very well without any regulation.
The General Manager needs to explain to the people of Wollongong and the visitors to this city what the justifications are for the regulations ie “rules”.
The questions that need answering are -
1. Where is the risk assessment that requires vehicles to park front in? What is the evidence that parking rear to curb is causing incidents and what is the frequency of these incidents?
2. Where are motorists expected to park overnight with the closure of the parking area?
3. What impact will the 10pm curfew have on the local businesses?
4. Where has WCC provided parking in the near vicinity for vehicles over 6m in length and when is this available or are these vehicle excluded from the North Wollongong beach precinct?
5. If it is not for raising revenue than what is the reason for the “rules”?
The Road Act also requires that signs be obvious before enforcement can be applied.
Given the current location of the sign and size of lettering it could be argued the notice is not obvious.

A TRUE DEMOCRACY
I was always under the impression that in our democracy members of parliament were elected to represent the people of Australia.
With some LNP MPs declaring their conscience will not allow them to vote for same sex marriage, even if the majority of Australians want it to happen, it makes me wonder how they can call themselves “Our Representatives in Government”.
Perhaps if they have such strong feelings that they cannot support the will of the majority of Australians then their conscience should tell them to leave our Parliament and do something else?

A TOUGH JOB
Silly me: I decided to apply for a job vacancy at Wollongong Council.
Their website lists all the qualifications and says email applications will not be considered, but must be submitted online.
I searched for instructions how to apply "online" but there weren't any.
Maybe they are trying to cut down on the number of applicants.
