Glen Barry Horlock was arrested after handing himself into Lake Illawarra Police Station on Saturday night, a week after the alleged assault took place at the woman’s Woonona home.
Police documents tendered to Wollongong Court during Horlock’s bail application on Sunday said he and the woman had been drinking alcohol at the home together on the evening of January 30 when the pair began to argue.
Horlock, who police claim at the time was already in contravention of an AVO prohibiting him from going within 100 metres of the house, is alleged to have grabbed the woman under the arms and dragged her into the master bedroom, where he threw her onto the bed.
Police allege Horlock then put his hands around her neck and began to squeeze, causing her to feel immediate pain.
She later told police she lashed out at him in an attempt to stop the assault, which allegedly prompted Horlock to punch her in the face, causing her nose to begin to bleed.
Horlock allegedly continued to push and hit the woman, leaving her with bruises on her neck and upper body.
The woman said when he eventually stopped she rolled over and pretended she was asleep, saying she was scared that if she tried to leave he would begin assaulting her again.
She left the next morning before he woke up, she told police.
Officers took a statement from the woman later that day, observing bruising on her body “consistent with the described assault”.
In court on Sunday, Registrar Cathy Frost refused to release Horlock, saying he had not shown cause why his detention wasn’t justified.
The case will return to court on Monday for a further bail application.
