Crystal Belinda Clarke became highly aggressive just moments after coming-to outside a unit block on Corrimal Street, attempting to hit a female paramedic with her high heel and spitting at and kicking officers who were trying to treat her.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie sentenced Clarke to a minimum six months’ jail on Tuesday, labelling the incident “very ugly”.
“You were highly aggressive towards police and paramedics...they were doing nothing but trying to help you, and you assaulted them,” she said.
Police documents tendered to Wollongong Local Court said residents found Clarke lying unresponsive in the gutter and turned her on her side before contacting triple 0.
She had regained consciousness by the time police and paramedics arrived, however it soon became apparent the 32-year-old was highly affected by alcohol and possibly under the influence of drugs.
When paramedics tried to help her stand, she took off her high heel and lashed out at them with it.
Police tried to subdue Clarke, however she continued to physically and verbally abuse them, kicking and spitting as she was loaded onto a stretcher.
She was taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment but was released the following day.
Clarke pleaded guilty to assault and resist arrest charges in court on Tuesday, with her lawyer, Adam Barnes, saying she had been ashamed of herself after learning what she’d done.
He confirmed she had a long-standing alcohol problem and also suffered from bipolar disorder.
The court heard she had a lengthy criminal record including having served jail time previously for matters of violence.
