Ms Smith won the 2015 NSW Premier’s History Award for her recent book, The Luck of the Irish, which explored the history of Irish immigrants to Australia, beginning with the 1835 shipwreck of the convict ship Hive. Ms Smith contends Irish convicts brought a culture that helped shape Australian egalitarianism.
The success of The Luck of the Irish, followed publication of her controversial and highly successful book, Australia's Birthstain which was published in 2008.
Her first book, A Cargo of Women: Susannah Watson & the Convicts of the Princess Royal, was a study of 100 female convicts transported to Australia. Ms Smith will speak at Thirroul library on Wednesday February 17 at 5pm. Bookings are essential; phone 02 4227 8191.
