The 73-year-old woman was robbed at Corrimal on Monday about 12pm as she used a footpath crossing on Railway Parade, near Corrimal Railway Station.
Police say the man approached the woman and attempted to remove her handbag from her walking frame.
She fell to the ground in the scuffle before the man grabbed the handbag and ran to a waiting vehicle with its engine running.
The vehicle involved is believed to be a grey-coloured late model Holden Commodore SS utility.
It was last seen driving west along Railway Parade.
The woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital suffering shock, and for checks relating to a pre-existing medical condition.
Officers from Wollongong Local Area Command were contacted and have launched an investigation into the incident.
Wollongong Local Area Commander, Superintendent Joseph Cassar said whilst all robberies were disturbing, targeting a 73-year-old woman on a walking frame was particularly abhorrent.
“My investigators are very keen to see this man brought before the courts quickly and are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to contact them.”
Detectives are urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Wollongong Police Station on 4226 7899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
