By the time Australia face New Zealand in their tournament opener on March 18, they will have only played six Twenty20 matches for the year – three against India in January and three against South Africa in March.

Maxwell intimated it was a less than ideal preparation for a major international tournament and felt it could have an adverse effect on some of his teammates.

"I played in the Big Bash so I got my T20 practice there, so it's not too bad. But the guys that don't have that, that have played in the Tests, some have only played one or two T20s this year," Maxwell said.

"I can understand how some of the guys in the squad might be a little bit frustrated how they haven't had their T20 opportunities, especially at international level that they would have liked heading into this tournament but it's something you've just got to deal with."

Despite international Twenty20 cricket having yet to reach the same heights as the domestic leagues around the world, Maxwell was confident that the World Twenty20 was a good concept and would survive in the long run if countries played that version of the game more often.

"If you're not playing regular T20 international cricket, it makes it hard to understand what your best team is, how you play together as a team and I think that's something we probably haven't done a lot of over the last couple of years," he said.

"We've had a lot of players come through and make a debut and not have to play another T20 for another year or so, so it would be nice to play more T20 international cricket leading up to obviously a major tournament."

Having to play all three formats of the game in a jam-packed summer schedule has also provided its challenges for Maxwell in preparing for the World Twenty20.

In the past two months, the Victorian has participated in the Big Bash League, both one-day series against India and New Zealand, a Twenty20 series against India and is now readying himself for the resumption of the Sheffield Shield with the Bushrangers.

"It is a little bit [confusing], it feels like there's been series thrown in left, right and centre to accommodate different teams," Maxwell said.

"It is an interesting preparation for a major tournament that we've been thrown around in these different formats but it's something you have to deal with as a modern-day cricketer … especially if you play in all three formats, it's obviously going to be a little bit tougher."

Maxwell had a rough tour of New Zealand, averaging just 2.00 with the bat – including two ducks. But the dynamic batsman wasn't concerned by that record and was comforted by the fact that he hit a match-winning 96 against the Indians five innings ago at the MCG.

"I haven't made a lot of runs in the last couple of digs but I don't feel out of form, especially in Shield cricket I find it's been an easy thing for me to transition back into," Maxwell said.

"I haven't really thought about being out of [form] at all recently. If you look back two-and-a-half weeks ago I had the innings of my career so it's pretty solid in my memory as well that I'm still hitting the ball as well as I have."
