Lake Heights pensioners Antonio and Michelangela Fera replaced their battered old Holden Barina with a brand new $20,000 Ford Fiesta yesterday after winning Wollongong City Council's annual rates incentive competition.
The couple beat more than 9000 other Wollongong home owners who received automatic entry to the draw after paying their rates and charges upfront before August 31.
"I'm very excited," she said yesterday, when handed the car's keys and registration papers.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you."
Mrs Fera, who recently bought a new car with financial help from her sons, said the couple would be able to give their old, unreliable second car the flick.
Fellow Lake Heights couple Romano and Anna Taccucci received a $1500 travel voucher as runners-up in the competition.
The duo said they had not yet decided where they might go.
