The Mercury first revealed in February at least 300 contractors and permanent staff would go from the company’s Illawarra workforce.
The union representing engineering and technical professionals says 72 jobs were being made redundant in the latest round of cuts.
Collieries' Staff and Officials Association director Catherine Bolger said about half the jobs would go from the Appin mine, a small number from Dendrobium mine and rest spread between the coal preparation plant and regional office.
The roles “fall within maintenance and engineering, mining, planners and schedulers, admin and support services and technical services”, Ms Bolger said.
A South32 spokeswoman said the latest cuts were included in those previously announced as part of “restructuring initiatives to reset the cost base of our Australian operations”.
The union wants the job cut process to allow voluntary redundancies.
