Plenty of teams have endured a large turnover of players in the off-season, but one thing that won’t change, will be the high quality of football across the five games at the weekend.
The weekend’s action will start at Kevin Walsh Oval on Saturday, when the Jamberoo Superoos host the Kiama Knights.
The Roos are hoping for a big start to the year, following an injury ravaged year on the field in 2015.
Kiama on the other hand are hoping to go one better than last year’s preliminary final exit against eventual champions Gerringong.
Roos skipper Jono Dallas will once again be key for everything the hosts do, which should be made easier with a bolstered pack in 2016, which includes James Asquith, AJ Hatch and Joe Rokoqo.
The visitors will rely upon star halfback Kieran Poole while coach Matt O’Brien has big wraps on young forward Vaughan Thistlethwaite.
Also on Saturday, the Albion Park-Oak Flats Eagles will host a determined Port Kembla Blacks outfit.
Both will be looking for a fast start to the season, following lean years in 2015.
In his 299th game, Dean Gray is again key for the Eagles, while inspirational half Mark Simon is back for the Blacks.
The final game on Saturday is the southern derby between Milton-Ulladulla and Nowra-Bomaderry.
Wind back the clock 12 months and this clash was as fiery a first round encounter as you will see.
The Bulldogs will miss star hooker Adam Stone’s influence but look for second-rower Gary Warburton to have a big game, in his return match.
Dogs coach Nathaniel Morrison also has high praise for the young guys in his squad, including Dale Hammond and Santino Battagliolo.
The Jets still have a sour taste in their mouth with the way their premiership defence ended in 2015, so they will be keen to get the two points at Bill Andriske Mollymook Oval.
New fullback Dwayne Collins looks like a game breaker, halfback Geoff Johnson makes his return for the club and captain Ben Wellington is looking fitter than he has been in years, which all bodes well for the Jets.
On Sunday, last year’s minor-premiers Shellharbour will travel to Cec Glenholmes Oval and take on Warilla-Lake South.
Despite missing both starting props, Craig Stapleton and Josh Cordoba, the visitors look just as strong as last season.
For the Gorillas, Mark Walsh, Aaron Henry and Josh Kent all return, which should make them a tough proposition on Sunday at home.
The reigning champions Gerringong will start their title defence as the final game of the round, when they host Berry-Shoalhaven Heads at Michael Cronin Oval.
The premiers return will most of the same side that won the final against the Sharks, including Joel Roberts, Brad Davidson and the Cronin brothers, Peter and Patrick.
The Magpies have lost a lot of experience this season, with players like Nathan Benney moving on, but new coach Adam Vanzanten has his young side primed for a big year.
Josh Ingold has dominated their trial matches in the halves and his combination with fullback Josh Coulter and hooker Blake Dryden, will cause headaches for teams this season.
