She was launching a netball tournament with a difference.
Wollongong will play host to Australia’s first official Beach Netball event in October.
And the former NSW Swifts player couldn’t be happier.
‘’As a Thirroul girl who loves the beach and netball, this event really is the best of both worlds,’’ Davies told the Mercury.
‘’It is unreal. The netball girls get to do what they love and have loads of fun in the sun at the same time.’’
It’s a modified and simpler version of one of the highest participation sports in the country.
Beach Netball involves women’s teams, mixed and kids’ competitions at some of Australia’s most iconic beaches.
There will be 100 teams from around Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia taking part in the Wollongong event from October 14-16.
‘’Illawarra is one of Australia’s largest netball districts so we thought it was fitting Wollongong earned the right to host the inaugural event,’’ Wall said.
She said the three-day festival of fun is ideal for all abilities and includes group fitness workouts, a celebrity match, food, music and the Official Beach Netball Party.
Davies agreed, adding she was looking forward to catching up with friends and having fun at the Wollongong event.
‘’It really is awesome that it’s in Wollongong,’’ she said.
‘’There is going to be loads of stuff happening throughout the three days for players and spectators alike.’’
Destination Wollongong chairperson Tania Davies said it was an honour for Wollongong to be chosen to host the inaugural Beach Netball event.
‘’I really encourage all the spectators to get out and enjoy the spectacle that it will be at the best location in Australia,’’ Ms Brown said.
‘’This region boasts a strong, proactive netball community and a proud history of hosting major netball events, and we’re sure this will become a hugely popular fixture on the sporting calendar.
‘’And where better to host it than glorious North Wollongong Beach, with its stunning vista, surrounding facilities and heritage-listed Bathers’ Pavilion as a backdrop.’’
