A father caught cruising through the Wollongong CBD on a child's motorcycle was double the legal alcohol limit and not wearing a helmet, a court has heard.
Graham Edward Tolhurst blew a 0.124 alcohol reading after police spotted him riding a mini-motorcycle along Flinders Street, Wollongong Local Court was told yesterday.
The 25-year-old had been drinking with friends on June 9 when he decided to go and buy cigarettes.
He hopped onto the kid's motorbike just before 9pm and headed south along Flinders Street without a helmet or headlights.
When Tolhurst saw police, he crossed into another lane, mounted the footpath on the western side of the road and continued heading south.
Officers pulled up behind him on the street and he was breath-tested at the scene.
Police checks revealed Tolhurst had never held a motorcycle licence and the vehicle was unregistered. Tolhurst yesterday pleaded guilty to mid-range drink driving, driving without a licence, driving an unregistered vehicle and not wearing a helmet.
The court heard Tolhurst was remorseful and had a young family. Magistrate David O'Connor fined Tolhurst $1500 and disqualified him from driving for three years.
