A few boats took on the abating sea late Saturday but with few fish on offer they didn’t stay long, opting to wait for a better weather window which happily Sunday and Monday provided.
There were some good snapper caught on Sunday up and around the Sea Cliff Bridge with a couple of boats finding them to 5 kilos anchored up in about 25-30m depth and using a steady burley trail to attract the fish.
Around the reefs in close to the Bellambi bommie there were a heap of rat sized kingfish, salmon and tailor with a couple of good sampson fish in amongst the mix.
The inshore reefs had exceptional eating pigfish with quite a few to the kilo mark.
Those chasing flathead were again rewarded with some big fish, with quite a few customers getting their bag limits in little over an hour’s time.
Stanwell Park and Burning Palms had a lot of solid fish as did Wollongong Sands and Port Kembla beach with best baits, mullet and or soft plastics.
There have been some excellent fish being caught by the land-based guys.
Wayne Cooke fished with Luke Mason on Tuesday night and chased the elusive silver ghost (mulloway).
Wayne managed his first for the year at a healthy 14 kilograms before topping off the night with a very sizable snapper – yes off the sand.
Somewhat media shy customer known as just Peter, also landed his first mulloway last week with two caught from an undisclosed rock ledge in the northern suburbs. He too managing a couple of nice pan sized snapper as well.
There were some solid kingfish pulled from the stones earlier this week with a couple of fish weighed that went 10 kilos and 12 kilos and were caught on live slimy mackerel and squid.
The run of big blue nosed bream continued off the beaches with some solid fish being landed with a couple of anglers getting them on 10/0 hooks and big slab baits intended for a jewfish.
