A World Cup, an Ashes whitewash and an Alan Border Medal, on top of piles and piles of runs in all three formats.

But one achievement had eluded the 26-year old. He had never made a ton in the shortest form of the game.

That all changed as Smith roared to 101 from 54 balls in last night's IPL clash between his Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions.

Smith was clean bowled on 41, only for debutant spinner Shivil Kaushik to have over-stepped the crease.

Showing his intentions to make the most of his lifeline, Smith belted the ensuing free hit well over the boundary.

Using all his powers, Smith's innings showcased the best of his abilities, mixing clinical placement with brutal power.

"I came in quite early in the Powerplay and when the ball is a bit new and the field is up you can play a few more shots," Smith told broadcaster Sony Six at the change of innings break.

"I probably got a little bit ahead of my normal strike-rate there. From there it was just going on with it.

"Obviously I had a bit of luck getting bowled off a no-ball but that's cricket and you've got to make the most of those days."

But while Smith celebrated a maiden Twenty20 ton, his side were left to languish what could have been, with Gurjarat chasing down their total in the last ball of the match. James Faulkner, on his birthday, hit the winning runs.
