While the temptation to put three-year-old on a float up to the Brisbane Winter Carnival might exist, Heys is adamant his colt will benefit more from continuing to learn his craft in weaker races like Tuesday’s Illawarra Turf Club Class 1 Handicap (1200m).

Dropping back from black type grade, Spieth was superb under the urging of apprentice Rory Hutchings as he scored a dominant five-length romp at the Illawarra Turf Club.

“He has always had that ability and was always going to do it, it was just that he needs some grounding,” Heys said after the win.

“He probably needs another two or three of these but we will discuss that [with the owners] after this win.

“It was a good effort.”

Heys added that he would love to progress Spieth throw the grades ‘under the right circumstances’ and expected the colt would take significant improvement from the run. 

The son of Thorn Park had finished worst than midfield behind Japonisme in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) at his previous start and was handed a hefty 61kg at his return to the provincial circuit.

Despite the weight, the $1.65 favourite had little trouble rounding up his rivals to beat Peter Robl-trained Trick Star ($4.80) and Peter and Paul Snowden’s Fast Candy ($7.50).

“It wasn’t the weight [that hindered him], he is still just a little bit green and didn’t track up behind the right horse,” Hey said.

“When he let down, he did so like a nice horse so if we can just keep him in this sort of grade that would be good.”

Hutchings, who is leading the Sydney apprentice premiership, was impressed with what he saw from Spieth after riding the colt off the speed and letting down strongly in the straight.

"He is an above average horse dropping back in grade,” Hutchings said.

"I summed it up pretty quick. 

“I just came back and got cover on him.

"He relaxed well and when he straightened up we put them away really comfortably.

"He had a good look at the finishing post so there is still improvement in him but he hasn't had to do too much."
