His English Premier League club Leicester City had "climbed the mountain" to become champions after second-placed Tottenham Hotspur could only manage a 2-all draw with Chelsea on Tuesday morning (AEST).

Spurs now can't catch Leicester, who are seven points clear with two games remaining.

It's been called one of the greatest underdog stories in the history of sport since Leicester were rated 5000-1 chances of winning the title at the start of the season.

Packwood, who can be heard as a sideline commentator during Canberra Raiders games, has been a Leicester fan all his life.

He still has family there after his parents moved to Canberra 52 years ago, two years before he was born.

As a kid, Packwood bought a short-wave radio to listen to Leicester games on BBC Radio and he would call his grandfather every Sunday to talk about the matches.

He thought about going over with his son Ben for his 50th birthday with the hope of watching their last three games, but he became "superstitious" and decided against it – just in case he put a jinx on them.

"When the full-time siren went ... I had tears, I was thinking of my grandfather, who I used to ring up every Sunday," an emotional Packwood said.

"I wish he was here. I rang my dad [John] this morning ... and I called out 'yes' when they won it and my young fella got up and he had tears in his eyes because he realises it's a family tradition and what it means to us."

Packwood's phone "rang off the hook" on Tuesday morning as old school friends congratulated the "kid who followed little Leicester".

While he wasn't one of the lucky ones to take the massive odds, Packwood did make a couple of bets with mates – one of whom is obliged to run naked over Commonwealth Bridge. Normally he bets on Leicester avoiding relegation.

Despite the amazing win, relegation is still something Packwood is expecting his team to be battling next season

"Leicester have always been known as the yo-yo team – we'd go up [to the Premier League], but then we'd go straight down [after being relegated]," Packwood said.

"It is a once in a lifetime ... next year we could be fighting for relegation. I've got no doubt our manager will say our target is 40 points [and staying up]."
