Not only is it exactly what’s needed it couldn’t be more timely with the Wollongong CBD population set to rise sharply with the inner city apartment developments under construction.
The Wollongong City Council has flagged a substantial overhaul for the precinct which is set to be debated at next week’s council meeting.
Already the concept sounds like something our State and Federal representatives of the region should be getting right behind.
A wonderful opportunity to show their financial support for the region.
Plans for the area are proposed to include new pools, water play areas, a wellness centre and a new gym.
It also includes upgrades to existing facilities designed at making the area a ``regional sports centre of excellence’’.
Upgrades are proposed for the tennis courts, outdoor playing fields and a bigger grandstand for the Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre.
In addition to this it includes a future vision for the relocation of the Snake Pit and a new stadium housing four new courts.
The plan also includes new recreational areas such as tracks, picnic areas, playgrounds around the precinct.
There is a lot of water to go under the bridge yet before these dreams become reality, but the need is there and the plans make a lot of good, common sense.
It’s a terrific opportunity and one which should be examined, carefully managed and acted upon.
