The ice-cream maker said it was aware of a very small number of cases where plastic pieces had been found in the tubs and could present a risk of injury, according to the voluntary recall announcement on Wednesday night.
The recall affects all Blue Ribbon flavours in the 1.25L and 2L tubs sold throughout retail stores across Australia.
The plastic pieces found their way into the ice-cream via machinery during the production process at Unilever's Minto factory where Blue Ribbon products are made.
"This is an operational issue whereby plastic appears to have entered some tubs during the production process," a Unilever spokeswoman said.
"We have undertaken a full investigation of the issue and reviewed our quality assurance measures. We have implemented a number of measures to address the issue and are confident the steps we have taken have rectified the problem."
Products with best before dates between April 27, 2018 and April 28, 2017 were affected, Unilever said in a statement.
"Consumers are advised not to eat the affected products and should return empty ice-cream tubs to the place of purchase for a full refund," the statement read.
Products with a best before date from April 28, 2018 onwards are not affected.
Unilever has investigated the situation and introduced processes to rectify the problem.
