For too long the jewel in the Wollongong’s crown has been left unpolished and unable to realise its full potential.
If properly utilised, Mount Keira has the potential to be a wonderful attraction for our city.
The Wollongong City Council has released a draft vision for the Mount Keira Summit Park.
After encompassing the ideas and views of the community, the council’s draft plan has been drawn to guide the transformation of Mount Keira to become “a vibrant recreation and tourism hub”.
There’s no shock value in the document, just good sensible guidelines which set some parameters for those organisations who are charged with enhancing the area.
The guidelines are broad enough to encompass a wide range of activities and facilities already mooted for the summit park.
However, they may be a little limiting for some of the more ambitious plans suggested as possible, yet only time will tell.
“This document has been prepared to respect people’s passion for the site, but we have to be aware that there’s diverse views and try to settle on some key themes that the majority wish to see on that site,” Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said at the launch of the vision.
“And I have to say, if we ever implement all these things, it will be a wonderful location.”
The Lord Mayor is right.
There are a lot of things that are mentioned or fall within the boundaries of the vision statement and not all of them are central to enlightening the summit park.
Yet some must be acted upon as soon as possible, which still won’t be for some time yet.
The draft document remains open for public comment until May 31.
The council intends to hold community information sessions on May 14-15 at the summit park.
The draft vision statement reads: ”A trip to the Mount Keira Summit Park will change the way people see and experience Wollongong.’’
The development of Mount Keira will indeed do that. Let’s keep “reaching for the summit” and get the jewel in the Illawarra’s crown sparkling.
