Cross played in the Steelers team that beat the Panthers in the 1989 SG Ball grand final, alongside the likes of Ryan Girdler, David Riolo and John Simon.
The current team includes the sons of a number of former players, including Cross (Jack), Andrew Farrar (Wilson), Wendell Sailor (Tristan), Steve Morris (Dylan), Andrew Willis (Jackson), David Moon (Tyler) and Peter Ford (Jackson).
"There are still a lot of Steelers supporters around and they are always asking me about how the boys are going," Cross said.
"I don't think many people expected them to go as well as they have but they just keep turning up for each other. Back in 1989 we actually beat Souths in the semi-final and then beat Penrith in the final, and the boys beat Souths last week to make the grand final so hopefully history can be repeated and they beat Penrith too."
