Natalie Bolton and her team decided to do something new for the children and their mums, aunties and grandmothers by staging a bake-off and wearing pink in support of women’s cancer research.
“We are always receiving delicious recipes and scrumptious treats from many of our culinary gifted mothers and grandmothers, aunties and friends. So we thought what better way to spend this occasion than inviting them to share their love, skills and passion with their children,” Ms Bolton said.
Families were invited to select a special recipe and bake it at home with their children. The only rules were that they had to have clean hands and not use any nuts. The families were then asked to bring the baked treats to the Early Learning Centre on Thursday with a photo taken of the baking event at home and a copy of the recipe.
They were then all put on display for everyone to come and sample at a morning tea on Friday morning where donations were taken for research into women’s cancer. As parents and relatives arrived they were invited to put toppings on their chosen treats with their children. A selection of strawberries, grapes, whipped cream, sprinkles and chocolate drops were waiting. Not surprisingly all the children were very keen to see their families.
Ms Bolton said as a result bake-off something special was being created for all the women who participated and their families.
“As a mothers day gift to our beautiful mums, grandmothers, aunties and friends all the photos and recipes contributed will be made into a special cookbook and distributed next week. The children are being encouraged to reflect through language and art about their special experiences. And these reflections will also be added to the cookbook,” she said.
Ms Bolton said the pink theme was a mark of respect for women who are or have suffered with any type of cancer. A video and gallery of from Kiama Stars morning tea will be linked to this story online over the weekend for Mother’s Day.
