The “dancing with the stars” style competition will see 12 Illawarra personalities – including the Illawarra Mercury’s Desiree Savage – hit the dance floor with a three minute routine in aid of raising awareness and money for Cancer Council NSW.
Having helped his best mate through a tough time when his father died of cancer, Mr Hunt jumped at the chance to do more for the cause.
“The whole process of them being sick and the impact it has … it was really tough,” he said.
Mollie McClymont, of country group The McClymonts fame, has had many people in her life touched with cancer.
“Both my grandparents, and my sister’s best friend died of melanoma so I know quite a lot of people who go through it. I’m just happy that I can do my little part,” said Ms McClymont.
She said despite the Cancer Council being around for a very long time and fundraiser’s for other charities constantly flowing through the year, it was important to continue spreading awareness and raising as much money as they can for cancer.
“We don’t have a cure right now, so we keep researching, keep finding out about all these different cancers. Hopefully one there day there won’t be any more,” she said.
Money raised goes to support services in the region such as the Cancer Information Centre at Wollongong Hospital, free transport to cancer treatment, in home help, access to financial, legal and emotional support as well as funding a number of prevention programs and research projects.
It’s the second year the Illawarra has run the event with the inaugural winner being IRT Foundation manager Toby Dawson. The corporate superstar raised $9000 for the charity in 2015.
After his fabulous rendition of “The Time Warp” in a skimpy pink outfit and spray tan, Mr Dawson has been asked back for another year as a judge.
He said he would be giving extra marks for exciting costumes and fun, plus anyone with a spray tan or dressed as a unicorn may also score extra points.
