It means he’s not the one to deliver the epic sprays common for other coaches but Devils prop Justin King said some honest words had the same effect against Helensburgh two weeks ago.
The Devils trailed 10-0 at the break after a lacklustre first half and were down 16-6 not long after the resumption before storming home with five unanswered tries in a 30-16 win.
“We had a pretty poor start and didn’t really look interested in the first half,” King, who has returned from a pec injury this season, said.
“You wouldn’t call it a spray but Brett gave us some stern words about attitude and being able to walk off afterwards and look yourself in the mirror.
“He keeps pretty calm which is probably a good trait for a coach but he was pretty fair to say the least in his assessment at halftime.
“We came out in the second half we were a different side and it showed in the scoreline.”
After consecutive tough games against Dapto and Helensburgh, King said the Devils are wary of a Cougars outfit that has made a habit of troubling them in recent seasons.
“You always get a tough game against Corrimal,” King said.
“They’ve pipped us a few times over the last couple of years so we’ll have to be on our game on the weekend.
“After a week off it’d be easy to come out and just go through the motions but Brett’s on top of us and we know what we have to do.
“We’ve ripped in at training with the week off and we’ll be ready to go.”
