The 23-year-old chose to sing Meghan Trainor’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” for his second attempt, after bowing out in the auditions for series three.
“Not a lot of people know that she actually has a country background. She grew up in Nashville writing country songs,” he said. “It seemed like the right thing … and I felt vocally I could nail the high parts of the chorus.”
Mr Lamont had a choice between camps when Ronan Keating and the Madden brothers both turned around just a few words out from the end of his song. In the end he chose the Maddens.
“They didn’t say a lot of great things, but they did turn, and they could hear past the nerves,” he said.
His wife, a high-school sweetheart of seven years, was waiting in the wings for support.
“We got married last February and we’ve always been very close, she’s my rock … she loves the fact I’m so passionate about music and that’s one of the things that brought us together,” he said.
The first met during the school music in their mid-teens and have never looked back since.
Mr Lamont’s stepmother Millie was also eagerly waiting in the wings, a woman he says is the reason he is where he is now.
“She’s like a mum to me. She was with my dad for 20 years and they had 12 children together, in total my dad had 23 children and he passed away when I was eight. So I never really knew him growing up,” he said.
“Millie though, saw I was pretty talented at a young age ... and entering country music talent quests. She took me everywhere … she got me out of a sticky situation at home.
“Mum couldn’t necessarily parent me the way you would hope, she had really a tough time because of mental health issues and I was in and out of care for that reason.”
Mr Lamont, who’s had gigs at Jane’s Bar and Three Chimneys, felt he went in with all he had and is excited to take on another contestant in the Battle Rounds.
The winner of The Voice will receive the grand prize of a recording contract with Universal Music Australia, $100,000 in cash and a new Mazda3.
Ellie Drennan, 16, from the Central Coast was crowned winner in 2015.
