Most of the prime spots are taken well before 8am, and so others have to look for less legal ways to park.
Some drivers around the station got stung on Monday when Wollongong City Council rangers swooped on neighbouring streets.
The rangers booked a long line of cars that had been parked on the grass verge – which is illegal – next to the tennis courts on Station Street.
It is understood the rangers were acting on complaints from residents.
“Council’s Parking Rangers conduct regular checks on parking in various parts of the city at different times,” a council spokesman said.
He also said there were at least five car parks near the station.
