FIVE years after former Illawarra batsman Graeme Batty scored a ton to cap off an unbeaten Australian championships campaign, NSW Country have vowed to regain the crown when it comes to Wollongong. With the title already secured, Batty scored 122 and Dapto’s Dale Scifleet blasted a half-century to chase down Victoria’s 292 and cap off a perfect tournament.

It was the last time the state won and NSW Country Cricket chairman Ian Hogg believes Illawarra and South Coast players could yet play a part in next year’s campaign, starting on January 3.
“We’ll be a big chance,” Hogg said. “The problem we have is the good players, after they go well in the championships is they go to Sydney.
“But we have some great Illawarra players, Scifleet smashed them all over the place. (South Coast batsman) Michael Arblaster played last year, while Kieran Gray missed out through injury, so hopefully he plays this time.” The women’s tournament will also be played in Wollongong at the same time, starting on January 3.
