Acting principal, Trent Whittaker believes the garden to have a number of benefits for both students and the wider community.
“We are able to get the students to have a more hands on approach with environmental education”, he said.
“Students are able to take the experiences and the self-esteem they have built in the garden back into the classrooms to change their lifestyles”.
The opening is just the beginning of the school’s permaculture plans with more garden expansions being a possibility.
“We also have plans for an outdoor kitchen so that students are able to move on to actually cooking their own healthy meals” said Mr Whittaker.
Gardening guru and host of ABC’s ‘Gardening Australia’, Costa Georgiadis has been appointed Garden Patron of Ganugan and the Coniston Public School community could not be more excited.
Mr Georgiadis encourages other local schools to consider also creating a garden.
“School gardens are a chance to expose kids to every part of life, whether it be health, creativity or science. If a school has a garden those kids are heading in the right direction”, he said.
