They have called for a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament and a recommendation to the NSW Governor for the removal of Judge Clive Jeffreys from the District Court of NSW.
Judge Jeffreys’ sentencing of Van Ryn was slammed earlier this year by the Court of Criminal Appeal (CCA), which called it “manifestly inadequate” and “an affront to the administration of justice”.
It increased the sentence to a maximum 18 years, 13 without parole.
The two families have received a response to a complaint letter to the Judicial Commission of NSW, an independent statutory corporation and part of the judicial arm of the state government.
While the commission found no grounds for judicial misconduct, it stated the Chief Judge of the District Court has proposed to “counsel Judge Jeffreys on the proper principles in sentencing in matters of this nature”.
