The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) initiative received 38 entries across the three age categories.
Students from Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts and Holy Spirit College make up the committee that sought advise from filmmakers such as Sandra Pires, of WHY Documentaries.
There were 20 on the judging panel on Thursday and winners will be announced on June 3 at the Regent Theatre where an environment expo will take place between 12 and 3pm.
Climate Girl Parrys Raines and Intrepid Landcare founder Megan Rowlatt will speak. The theme for the competition was Big Trouble, Little World and the young film makers were asked to interpret that creatively.
OEH regional manager Gabrielle Pietrini said the competition was deliberately designed by young people for young people.
