Those attending the Illawarra rugby league dinner at the City Beach Function Centre would have heard new NRL CEO Todd Greenberg deliver that message.
Mr Greenberg and Racing NSW CEO Peter V’Landys were the special guests at the dinner and both have had to overcome huge obstacles and challenges.
Just this week the new NRL boss was served a curveball with some of his league’s players caught messing with the wrong crowd.
This was despite sending a clear warning earlier in the year.
“I remind every single person in the game,’’ Mr Greenberg said.
“It’s not just players. It’s coaches, administrators, it’s all of our staff - just be very, very wary of the people and the company you keep because the game should be held in the highest of standards.’’
Mr V’Landys has fought and won some major battles in his tenure as the head of racing in this state.
He has taken on both the major corporate bookmakers and the NSW Government and won.
Both Mr Greenberg and Mr V’Landys shared a similar approach.
Do what you think is right, not what you think will be popular.
Sound advice for anyone in a position of any form of leadership.
It’s human nature, when questioned or challenged, to get caught up in that.
Both leaders spoke about if, fundamentally, you know what you are doing is a good thing to do, go ahead a do it without any fear.
It was a great chance to listen and to learn from two such leaders in business.
Channel Nine’s Yvonne Sampson was the perfect host for the occasion too.
Congratulations to Bob Millward and the team who pulled the function together.
It proved to be a perfect afternoon for the hundreds in attendance.
A BRIGHT FUTURE
The future of journalism is in good hands.
Some of the universities around the country are producing some fantastic talent and the University of Wollongong is certainly leading the way.
On Thursday night it was an honour to attend UOW’s Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts 2016 Awards Night.
Meeting two of the three award winners of the Illawarra Mercury awards was a real thrill.
Terrific young people with clearly bright futures.
Jessica Symonds won the Illawarra Mercury Communication and Media Studies Prize, while James Wilson and Madeline Crittenden won the Illawarra Mercury journalism prize.
