McCrone has played six games for four wins this season as Benji Marshall battles a recurring hamstring complaint.
Marshall has been named to return against the Cowboys on Saturday but McGregor said McCrone – who was named18th man – could be utilised from the bench as cover.
“That’s certainly something that we’re looking at,” McGregor said.
“We’ll see how we get through training [on Friday] but it’s certainly an option and a good option.
“Josh can play seven or nine and if there’s any doubt through the game with his hamstring we can certainly put him on the field, he’s done a great job there in the past. It’s a good option to have because [hooker] Mitch Rein is an 80-minute player anyway.”
