The region is forecast to experience its coldest day so far this year on Saturday, as showers and moderate winds cap maximum temperatures at just 16 degrees in Wollongong and Albion Park.
At 11am it was 13.4 degrees at Bellambi Point and one degree cooler inland at Albion Park.
Taking into account the wind chill factor, the temperature along the coast felt like more like 9.6 degrees at the same time.
Windy conditions are expected to hang around on Sunday although the showers should clear, briefly.
Wet weather is tipped to return on Monday, when a possible shower is forecast, and continue until Friday.
Tuesday is tipped to be the wettest day of the week, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a 70 per cent chance of between four and 20 millimetres falling in Wollongong.
Rainfall totals away from the coast aren’t expected to be as high.
The extended run of wet weather has prompted NSW Police to issue a warning for drivers in southern coastal areas of the state.
The warning has urged road users to decrease their speed and steer clear of flooded roads.
Motorcycle riders, cyclists, and pedestrians have been told to take extra care, be aware of their surroundings and ensure they can be seen by other motorists by wearing bright clothing.
Two pedestrians have been killed on NSW roads since 9am on Friday, including a 32-year-old man who was hit by a car as he walked along the M1 Princes Motorway at Dunmore.
The man had been wearing black clothing at the time he was hit, police said.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said every road user should exercise care.
“Today’s rain, with more predicted next week, will make roads slippery, particularly for drivers, riders and cyclists alike who have to stop quickly,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said on Saturday.
“After a significant period of dry, warm weather, the rain will loosen up oil and other material on our roads.
“We all need to reconsider our road use, whether driving, riding, cycling, or walking, safety has to be the priority.”
A 96-year-old man who was struck by a car reversing out of a driveway on Lee Road at Beacon Hill, in Sydney’s north, died in hospital on Friday night.
Investigations into both incidents are continuing.
The latest pedestrian fatalities take the state’s road toll to 168, 39 more than this time last year.
In the past week there have been three incidents involving a pedestrian in the Illawarra.
A woman was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a car in Unanderra on May 20.
Another woman sustained multiple injuries when she was struck by a 4WD outside Wollongong Hospital on Monday.
