Much of the region could be drenched by in excess of 100 millimetres of rain over the next eight days, according to the weather bureau, making for a wet welcome to winter.
Higher rainfall totals are possible along the coastal fringe.
Bellambi Point copped 46mm in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday, while Albion Park recorded 19.2mm during the same period.
The rainfall, which will be recorded as part of the June 1 figure (24 hours to 9am), comes after just 9.8mm fell at Bellambi Point during May.
Bureau of Meteorology models show Saturday and Sunday are tipped to be the wettest days this week for the Illawarra and South Coast.
The weather bureau says a low pressure system is likely to develop over the state’s northern inland later in the week and move southeast, bringing rain to most districts.
The system should move out to sea during the latter part of the weekend.
