The surveillance will start on December 17 and go through summer, Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward said.
Mr Ward said this was part of the New South Wales Government’s $16 million shark management strategy.
“Recent aerial surveillance programs conducted along the New South Wales coast have shown to be an enormous success, helping alert authorities and the general public when a shark is posing potential danger to swimmers or surfers,” Mr Ward said.
“This ‘eye in the sky’ will be able to detect sharks in the water and alert beachgoers and beach authorities during those busy school holidays.”
If a shark is spotted and it is deemed to be posing a danger to people, the helicopter will use its siren and loud hailer to immediately alert swimmers and surfers and get them out of the water.
The Department of Primary Industries will also tweet the information.
