The bloodied face of the Australian on set of an American horror-comedy series has been used as evidence by Trump supporters of the ugly face of the US presidential election campaign.

Conservative Nation, a pro-Trump supporters' network, tweeted the image on June 6 beneath the headline: "Here's what happened to female Trump supporter when she met 'peaceful' and 'tolerant' liberals."

It became conflated with a scuffle at a Trump campaign event in San Jose in California the day before.

The image in fact was taken during production of Ash vs Evil Dead, a US television series developed by Sam and Ivan Raimi, which premiered last October.

Weaving plays Heather, the sole survivor of a hiking group, who is killed off in an Evil Dead plague.

Hair and make-up artist Hannah Wilson originally showcased the image on Instagram in January depicting realistic special effects, including a bloodied eye and claw marks. The account has since been made private. But Weaving's Instagram also shows the make-up artistry.

The misuse of the image was quickly questioned, exposed as false, and reported by Snopes, The Daily Dot, zines dedicated to reporting the internet.

Weaving is the niece of Hugo Weaving and broke into mainstream acting playing Indi Walker in the soap opera Home and Away. It isn't known whether Weaving is even a Trump supporter.
