With all the recent talk and the development of new tactics and methods, to specifically target these previously mythical broadbill swordfish, quite a few boats headed wide to drop a bait at these amazing fish.

Chris Cleaver from Shimano headed out wide to chase himself a broadbill and although he didn’t boat a sword he did manage a solid 15-kilogram dolphin fish and yes, it is the middle of June.

Chris said he was surface casting a stick bait lure when the big dolly hit to the amazement of all onboard and the fishing fraternity ashore, for this time of year.

Others chose to deep drop and were rewarded with multiple huge blue eye trevalla and gemfish coming in both Sunday and Monday this week.

In closer, the anticipation was high for a solid snapper bite but unfortunately the raging current had other ideas.

However, there were some good fish caught, although not in big numbers, and those who found them have been keeping locations very close to their chests. Good reddies to 78cm were caught in relatively shallow water from what the rumours say.

Along with the snapper, there were many big blue mowies caught, as well as pigfish, trevally and plenty of cuttlefish were seen waiting to spawn.

Flathead were still about with some excellent sized fish coming in but again the current made them hard to fish for. Those who persisted managed a healthy bag of big lizards.

Beaches were the talking point of last week with everyone keen to go and chase a jew from the sand.

However, the big seas Mother Nature delivered last week have moved more sand than anyone would have thought, uncovering rocks that have not been seen in many years including the concrete ramp at Austinmer boat ramp.

Beaches have fished well since the weather system moved on but alas mulloway have been missing since before the blow and it seems the short range forecast indicates another pattern might be heading this way.
