Members from the Thirroul Transport Committee (TTC) will sit down with the officials at a meeting organised by Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward.

Stephen Kennard is a member of the TTC and will be at Wednesday’s meeting. 

He has been part of the long-running campaign to alleviate the commuter parking congestion in the suburb and is hopeful the meeting will see some results.

“I feel good about the fact that they seem to be senior people,” Mr Kennard said.

“It was Gareth’s idea to get people there who could make decisions and we’re assured that’s the case.”

The core of the committee’s issues come from the 2013 revision of the rail timetable, which turned Thirroul into a hub station for express trains and ran “feeder” services to other stations.

However, commuters chose to drive to Thirroul to catch a train, parking in the streets.

A trial of an extra express stop at Austinmer has been a success but Mr Kennard claims that only dealt with “20 to 30 per cent” of those driving to Thirroul to catch a train.

“Many more people south of Bulli Pass use our car park than from north,” Mr Kennard said.

“Those people, it would be much better for them if there were some [express] trains that stop at Bulli. If they could bypass the whole Thirroul scenario it would be much better for them.

There’s a 100-space car park at Bulli and it’s grossly underused. It’s infrastructure just sitting there doing nothing.” 

Part of their wishlist involves 10 express services a day stopping at Bulli, reducing the waiting times at Thirroul for commuters connecting to express trains and ensure that northbound services don’t require commuters on feeder services to change platforms.
