Timmy Cahill strutting his stuff for Sydney FC against Melbourne City in December at WIN Stadium.
Only two problems here.
Firstly, the Socceroos legend hasn’t officially signed with Sydney FC yet but is strongly rumoured to be close to doing so.
The Football Federation of Australia wants Cahill to be the new face of the A-League and is pushing to make the deal happen.
Secondly, WIN Stadium hasn’t yet been confirmed as the venue for the December 9 clash.
Wollongong is said to be a strong option for the game but there is nothing certain or clear at this stage.
The politics in Australian football make the politics in the Federal Parliament look like child’s play.
In quite an odd move, the new A-League season fixture was released with a “TBC” (to be confirmed) next to the December 9 clash.
UK band Coldplay has derailed Sydney FC using its traditional home venue, therefore forcing the need for the alternative venue to be found.
“If ever there was an opportunity for the game to be played in Wollongong, that would be terrific,” Football South Coast chief executive Ann-Marie Balliana said.
“In the past, especially for the first fixture we had last year, we have drawn great crowds.
“We would obviously love an opportunity to host another A-League game here.’’
Football, of the traditional kind, has such a strong following in this region.
To prove it we have three Matildas who will don the green and gold for Australia at the Rio Olympics later this year.
A healthy crowd of 11,000 turned when Wollongong last held an A-League match.
At that game in January, 2015, the Sky Blues played out a 0-0 draw with the Newcastle Jets.
You think for a Sydney FC and Melbourne City clash including one of the greatest players to ever pull on a Socceroos jumper, that crowd figure would be even higher.
So would be the return for Sydney FC.
And so would be the return for football in this region if not the country.
Whatever and whoever need to come together to get this deal done, just need to make it happen.
C’mon Sydney FC and the FFA, let’s get it done and watch Timmy Cahill get it on in the Gong.
