The Refugee Week event was designed to involve a diverse melting pot of musicians, dancers, poets and performers from refugee and non-refugee backgrounds all celebrating Wollongong’s multicultural community. It was hosted by Strategic Community Assistance to Refugee Families (SCARF).
Executive officer Sherryl Reddy said there was such a great response from people who soaked up the colour and atmosphere of the occasion.
She said Refugee Week helped build understanding of the refugee experience and helped ‘’recognise the resilience of people from refugee backgrounds and to really celebrate the positive contribution they make to our community’’.
Ms Reddy said everyone really seemed to appreciate the opportunity to consider how new arrivals have experienced unimaginable horror in fleeing their homes.
