With the right slice of luck, a semi-professional side like us at the Wollongong Wolves could get the chance to face off in one of the A-League’s heavyweights in a competitive format.
It’s a mouth-watering prospect that undoubtedly has all of us around the Wolves excited for this Thursday’s draw.
We’ve already been blessed with the opportunity to play an A-League opponent in the Cup when we met the Central Coast Mariners two years ago. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get on the national stage and isn’t something that comes around very often for clubs in our division.
With A-League sides only in the earlier stages of their preseason, it also shapes as a massive chance to claim a big scalp.
Obviously there is only a slender chance of drawing one of four A-League clubs again this time around, but it’s definitely something to hope for heading into the big draw.
If a marquee clash against a team like the Western Sydney Wanderers or Sydney FC doesn’t eventuate, we will still be just as keen to continue our run in the tournament.
With teams from every state and territory across the country still in the draw, it’s possible we could be travelling almost anywhere for the match. A home game is obviously ideal, but the way the balls end up falling is completely out of our hands.
Regardless of how they fall, we are proud just to have made it this far in the tournament.
Although we have had a fairly disappointing season so far, getting to this phase in the competition is something we always wanted to achieve.
Now the goal is to do the achievement justice in the round of 32.
