The 130th edition of The Championships at Wimbledon gets underway tonight and as always, every player making the trip to London will have their eyes firmly on winning the prized silverware.
However, the two top seeds of the Men’s and Women’s draw are coming into this year’s Championships from very different places:
History Beckons for The Djoker
Novak Djokovic, having achieved his maiden French Open title just a few weeks ago is now in possession of all four Grand Slam trophies at the same time. If he is able to retain the Wimbledon and US Open titles, he will have accomplished the Grand Slam.
Needless to say, Djokovic’s record in 2016 has been phenomenal having tasted defeat just three times in 47 matches. For all of you lovers of a stat, that equates to a winning percentage of 93.6%.
Obviously, Djokovic’s recent record at Wimbledon is even better.
The 29-year- old has won the previous two titles and is looking for a three-peat. He will become the fifth player in the “open era” to accomplish the feat.
As you can see, victory at The Championships in 2016 will mean an awful lot for the talented Serbia and considering he may well be at the height of his powers, you have to wonder who will step forward and stop his history chasing run.
Serena Stumbling?
Serena Williams returns to a happy hunting ground in Wimbledon at a time where she really needs it.
Williams has been the dominant force in women’s tennis for many years but there have been a few signs that things may not be happening as easily for the American as they used to.
From The Championships of 2012 up to last year’s tournament, if Serena had made the final of a Grand Slam she won it.
And she made eight Grand Slam finals in that time mind you. Any surface. Any place. If she made it to the final and you were playing against her, you were getting the runner-up trophy.
However, 2016 has been a very different story.
Yes, she has made the finals of the two Grand Slams so far, but she hasn’t taken home the silverware in either of them.
This is very un-Serena like.
22-year- old Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza brought Williams undone in the French Open and 28-year-old German Angelique Kerber got the better of Williams at the Aussie Open.
Williams will be 35 years of age come September.
Is time starting to catch up to Serena? Are the younger brigade starting to not only catch up but overtake her?
Muguruza was Williams’ victim in last year’s women’s final at The Championships, but the talented Spaniard got the better of Williams the last time they met.
Will the same scenario play out on the grass of Wimbledon as it did on the clay of Roland Garros?
We will have to wait and see.
