But while Cunningham MP Sharon Bird and her Whitlam counterpart Stephen Jones said they support a ban on CSG mining in drinking water catchment, neither would commit to moving Federal legislation.
‘’What we have discovered is that this is standard for Labor pollies,’’ said IKNAG member Cherry Haedaker.
‘’They will talk about anything rather than give a direct answer.’’
Ms Haedaker said Coalition members also did not directly answer whether they supported a ban on CSG mining in drinking water catchments.
They also avoided commenting on whether they would move Federal legislation to enact a ban CSG mining in drinking water catchments.
‘’This means our two major political parties do not believe that our most important resource for life, for the future of our kids and grand kids is worth the attention of our national government,’’ she said.
IKNAG member Annie Marlow added that Cath Blakey and Tom Hunt, the Greens candidates for Cunningham and Whitlam respectively, replied yes to both questions.
Fellow group member Shirley Gadding said protecting our water from the risks of coal seam gas mining remains urgent.
She said the Illawarra Knitting Nannas Against Gas want a federally legislated ban on coal seam gas mining to protect our drinking water catchments, ‘’no ifs, no buts’’!
