The Sky Blues are hoping to make the 23-year-old a permanent addition to their squad where, despite his ability to play in defence, they view him as a long-term solution to their midfield.

Fairfax Media understands Sydney have agreed personal terms with Brillante, who is set to end his two-year spell in Italy pending a release from the final year of his contract with the side which placed fifth in last year's campaign.

Although on the outer at the club, Brillante has not yet been given the green light to have his deal terminated and make the switch, though it's understood a deal could be arranged by the end of the week.

The versatile player made two Serie A appearances with the Florence club before being loaned to Empoli and Serie B club Como.

Previously, Brillante spent four seasons in the A-League with the Newcastle Jets and the now defunct Gold Coast United.

He has made five appearances for the Socceroos.
